Note from Cullen (me):

I love this reed- my go-to professional reed is still a Herzberg shape but for the value my Student Plus Reed might just be the best all-around playing reed I make! I recently (October 2025) performed Stravinsky's Pulcinella Suite on this reed shape and will be performing Scheherazade in early December 2025. I like Herzberg style reeds the most but the forming process is very labor intensive and the Fox Dicker reed shape is just a bit more narrow than my Herzberg "Original" shaper. With the Rieger 1A and Fox 2 shapes, I feel they both can lose tonal-focus when playing a more present solo line at full volume because the throat (area between the collar and 2nd wire) is a touch too narrow for modern American-style playing, especially in larger ensembles. I corrected for this in the design of the throat the of the tube by bumping the collar up to around a 10mm width when using 1.35-1.40mm gouged cane. This extra internal volume in the reed adds 1. additional dynamic range especially for the pianissimo, 2. clarity of articulation when double tonguing passages or the occasional Haydn Symphony, and 3. gives a more prominent feeling of stability at full volume.

About the Reed Shape

The CB Student Artist 'Plus' reed shape is designed to offer a balanced, reliable playing experience for developing bassoonists- a few personal adjustments and it just might be the best playing reed you've ever had! It is inspired by my personal favorite reed shapes, blending characteristics of the Rieger 1A and Herzberg shapes- it's a Herzberg-'esque' blade on a Rieger 1A-'esque' tube that's about 1mm wider (10mm) at the the collar. The standard blade and wider throat offers this reed an enhanced pianissimo articulation, a rich complexity of tone colors, a wide dynamic range, and consistent performance across the full range of the instrument.
