Whether you're just starting out or preparing for college auditions, private lessons with Dr. Cullen Blain are designed to meet you where you are—and help you grow from there. Cullen’s students consistently earn top chairs in youth orchestras, school bands, and regional honor ensembles across California with some students continuing music in college and beyond!

With years of experience as a performer and educator, Cullen offers expert guidance in all aspects of performance from tone development, technique, to musical interpretation. Lessons are customized to each student’s goals, whether you're exploring the oboe or bassoon for fun or pursuing professional-level artistry.

Lesson Details & Tuition
All lessons are held in-person in-person or online.

45-minute weekly lesson – $55
60-minute weekly lesson – $75
Introductory rate: New students in grades 6–12 receive a discounted rate of $42/week for their first 3 months (45-minute lessons only)

Tuition is billed monthly, due the first week of each month.

Cygnets Double Reed Group Class – Great for School Programs!
Group lessons for beginning / intermediate oboe & bassoon students

60-minute weekly lesson – cover the basics in a fun group class setting!
Double Reed Discovery: Explore tone, technique, and teamwork in a small group setting that encourages musical growth and confidence.
Foundations First: Students learn essential oboe and bassoon skills through fun, accessible exercises designed for early-stage players.
Prep for the Next Step: Cygnets is the perfect launchpad for joining school bands, youth orchestras, or moving into formal music instruction.

Extras for Students and Schools

Reed Making – $35/class (materials not included)
Musicianship & Theory Classes – $25/class
Oboe, Bassoon, & Double Reed Ensembles – Small chamber groups or summer bassoon band for advanced students

Bassoon Lesson requirements (online)

The lesson space should have good lighting, and enough distance between the camera and the musician to see both hands while playing and offset the music stand so as to not obscure the view.
Please follow up with me regarding the prospective design of the lesson or group class and available reed-making and adjustment tools, I am happy to further discuss the design and structure of the lesson or class with you.

Bassoon Reed Making Class and Tool Recommendations

For reed-making classes, some basic reed-making tools for reed adjustments are nice to have on hand. I can help with selection and recommendation depending on your skill level, reed preference, and budget.
