Bassoon Reed Profile Dimensions

We offer 3 styles of Bassoon reed profiles for processed cane: Standard, Tip-Taper, and Wedge-Scrape.
Recommended overall reed length of 55mm with a blade length of 27mm.
Reed cane is processed with a 28mm tube length.

Standard Profile

The Standard Profile is a tip-tapered reed profile with 2 different slope profiles across the reed blade. From the collar, 0mm, to 18mm is a slope of -0.0075, or 0.43 degrees, and from 18mm to 32mm, the fold, is a slope of -0.026, 1.49 degrees. The ‘critical point’ measurement of 1/2” from the fold (19.3mm from the collar) is 0.026” or 0.68mm.

Tip-Taper Profile

The Tip-Taper Profile is closer what many consider a Parallel-scrape with 2 slope profiles across the reed blade. From the collar, 0mm, to 18mm is a slope of -0.0047, or 0.27 degrees, and from 18mm to 32mm, the fold, is the same as the Standard Profile with a slope of -0.026, 1.49 degrees. The ‘critical point’ measurement of 1/2” from the fold (19.3mm from the collar) is 0.026” or 0.68mm.

Wedge-Scrape Profile

The Wedge-Scrape Profile has only 1 slope profile across the reed blade of -0.017 or 0.98 degrees. With a collar measurement of 0.90mm and 0.35mm at the fold. The ‘critical point’ measurement of 1/2” from the fold (19.3mm from the collar) is 0.022” or 0.57mm.
