Selecting the Correct Strength Légère Reed
Most if not all players will be satisfied with a Medium strength reed but I’ve found a pretty good general guideline from customer orders and in discussion with a number of musicians.
Légère Reed Strength Recommendation
Medium-Soft Strength - 10 hours or less of playing time per week including personal practice plus time-in-rehearsal
Medium Strength - 8 to 20 hours of playing time per week including personal practice plus time-in-rehearsal; personal preference of darker tone, lighter articulation, relaxed embouchure
Medium Hard - 16 to 28 hours of playing time per week including personal practice plus time-in-rehearsal; personal preference of brighter tone, crisper articulation, tighter embouchure
Modifying your Légère Reed
I DO NOT RECOMMEND ANY MODIFICATIONS TO A LEGERE REED. REEDS THAT HAVE BEEN ALTERED ARE NOT ELIGIBLE FOR AN EXCHANGE OR REFUND. MODIFICATIONS CAN RESULT IN IRREVERSIBLE DAMAGE TO THE REED.
I’ve seen a few reeds and heard from some oboists and bassoonists that modification of the reed has led to cracking and irreversible damage.
IF you are still likely to modify the reed a few notes from my observations:
The sides of the Légère double reeds (Oboe, English horn, Bassoon), along the rails, are glued in place.
The tip of the reed is extremely delicate.
DO NOT insert a standard metal or concave plaque: maybe cut down a 0.50mm thin guitar pick? I use a cut down Dunlop Tortex Red 0.50mm guitar pick for oboe reeds made of reed cane and it works okay.
Légère's bassoon and oboe reeds do not qualify for the Légère Exchange of Strength policy and all requests will be reviewed on a case by case basis.
