Bassoon Reed Maker's Starter Kit by Rigotti

from $115.00

Great for students new to reed making! Reed adjustment and reed making starter kit for Bassoon by Rigotti. Comes with a double-bevel knife, holding mandrel, cutting block (medium-size), metal plaque, and case. *Standard kit shown*

  • Upgraded Kit - I have created an upgraded kit to be what I use on a daily basis- unfortunately there’s no secret here and it’s really nothing fancy, just high quality tools that are easy to use and a knife that is easy to sharpen. The kit includes a baroque-style mandrel, Vitry-style double hollow ground knife, a plastic reed plaque (to reduce wear on the knife blade), and ebony cutting block. I still use my Rigotti tools 30 years later…

  • Standard Kit - I would recommend checking in with your teacher to what kit is best, the standard kit is okay for middle school or early high school students but for a student looking to make their own reeds or heading to a summer camp or college I highly recommend the upgraded kit.

Knife Care
There are so many “systems” nowadays but nothing beats patience, time, a lot of experience, and high quality stones. I learned to sharpen my tools from machinists, woodworkers, and the occasional oboist. Again, nothing fancy- just high quality tools and learning the craft.

Recommended Knife-care: Soft Arkansas Stone (200-350 grit), Hard Arkansas Stone (500-650 grit), a Ceramic Stone (1000 grit) and honing oil. In between resurfacing and sharpening, I use a leather strop with polishing compound.
