About the Reed Shapes
Each reed shape is designed to offer a balanced, reliable playing experience for developing bassoonists. Here's a quick guide to help you choose:
CB Standard
Based on the Fox Special shape, this reed is similar to the Rieger 1A (R1A) and Fox 2 (F2)—two of the most popular and versatile shapes. Expect a warm, centered sound with an even scale, responsive dynamics, moderate projection, and excellent control. A great all-purpose reed for students.CB Standard+
Inspired by some of my personal favorite designs, this reed blends characteristics of the Blain (BL), Winstead, and Herzberg shapes. With a standard straight-line blade and a wider throat and tube, it offers enhanced articulation, a rich and complex tone, a wide dynamic range, and consistent performance across the full range of the instrument.CB Standard 2
Closely modeled after the Fox 2 shape, this reed shares the same easy response and well-rounded tone as the CB Standard, with excellent playability, control, and moderate projection. A great choice for players who like a familiar feel with balanced performance.CB Standard Wide
Similar to the Fox 3 or Rieger 2, this larger reed shape provides a bold, full-bodied sound with strong projection. It’s especially articulate in the low register and offers a rounded, colorful tone in the tenor and upper range. Ideal for students who want a big, confident sound.
